Putting the A and M in STEAM

April 27 @ 9:00 am - 3:15 pm

Join us for a day of learning how you can support your young patrons in math and art and have fun doing it. You will leave with some practical ideas you will be able to use when you are setting up your next round of STEAM programs at your library.

9:15-9:45 a.m. – Registration/ Continental Breakfast

9:45-10:00 a.m. – LACONI Business Meeting

10:00 -12:00 a.m.- Laura Grandau- Promoting Mathematical Thinking during Storytime and Other Literacy-based Activities at the Library

This interactive session for librarians will present ways and reasons to see and explore mathematical ideas all around us. It will explain core mathematical concepts that children construct, and examine the important role that librarians play in helping children and families engage with math thinking and learning at the library. The session will make connections between children’s literature and the Every Child Ready to Read framework. It will support librarians in developing math-rich storytime sessions and activities, and encouraging parents to incorporate math language and concepts in talk with their children.

12:00-1:00 p.m.- Lunch and Library Tours

1:00- 2:00 p.m.- Jess Alexander- Morton Grove Library Libraries Count (so don’t forget the math!)

Is math missing from your library’s STEAM line-up? Not to worry! You don’t need to be a math whiz to inspire the kids in your community. In this session, you will bash your way through math anxiety, and get motivated to help kids build positive associations with mathematics. With tea parties, teamwork, and a touch of mayhem, attendees will learn how to plan low-cost, in-house programs for youths ages 3 to 12. Arithmetic skills optional, open minds required.

2:00- 3:00 p.m. – STEAM Dating

Find a match for your next art or math library program– spend an hour speed dating style as you visit with your colleagues for ten minutes at a time to learn about the innovative math are art programs in their libraries. Dress to impress!
